Fabulous news! Earl has gone for his last heartworm checkup and is now all clear. Blood tests and heart x-rays confirmed this great news. Earl has regained the bounce in his step and is ready for adoption. Earl is currently in foster care and is doing wonderful He is an older boy (approximately 9) but is full of life, fun and love. Earl is very sociable with people and other dogs. He has the beautiful temperament of the coonhound – extremely good companion dog, devoted to his family, very intelligent and loving. Earl is calm, obedient, house trained, good on leash and ready to love his new forever family. Earl is a special needs boy. His hearing is limited, but that just makes him more special to us.

EARL’S HISTORY WITH ARRF
Well Earl has done his 6 weeks of limited activity and we have moved him into foster care. As well Earl has been neutered and had a much-needed dental. He is doing very well and is such a spry fellow.
In mid August Earl will be having another heart X-ray and heart worm test – we are all sending positive thoughts Earl’s way for a clean bill of health. He so deserves a break as he has been through so much and is such a trooper.
Thank you so much Jodi for being Earl’s foster mom – we are so appreciative to you
Earl’s story: We rescued Earl from an animal control facility and brought him immediately to our vet clinic to have a thorough health check. The next day we got some very bad news about our sweet boy – he was heartworm positive.
This sweet older fellow ended up as a stray and we suspect that his previous owner(s) knew his health condition and decided to turn Earl out as a stray.
Heartworm is treatable: however, it is very expensive to treat, and it is a painful process requiring a six-week recovery period with ongoing monitoring. We took everything into consideration and we knew that Earl deserves to be given a chance – Earl has a lot of love to give and is a wonderful, sweet, affectionate boy – he deserves someone to step up and help him; he didn’t ask to be owned by irresponsible people .
Earl’s treatment consists of two injections 24 hours apart; he received his first injection on Friday, April 15, 2011 and the second treatment was done on Saturday, April 16, 2011 – he now needs 6 weeks of confined rest which means he needs to be crated and his activity level needs to be kept very low. Please note that heartworm is not contagious; it is only contracted through the bite of a mosquito. It is NOT contracted by saliva, a scratch, sharing the same water and/or food.
